K2000 V3.87 - Drum trigger with sample option

Hi All.

Have had a K2000RS and K2000S for a very long time, but now want to try and trigger samples via the sample inputs, but can't see how to do it. The interweb has not thrown up any links.
The machines are a K2000RS V3,87J with SMP-R, and a K2000 V3.18 with SMP-K (soon to be upgraded to V 3.87.

Any tips on how to set this up? (preferably within a setup). I'm hoping it's possible to drive the inputs with a pair of drum pads with trigger outputs (like the roland PD-8 or similar)
I can't seem to find settings for which MIDI channel and which pair of MIDI notes will be triggered.....

cheers,

I wasn't quite sure where to post this. You see Clif hasn't yelled at me yet so I am trying for the record number of noob posts without being called an idiot This seems to be the 'catch all' forum so it looked like the safest place.

I need to learn more about live sound. I am buying a PA and starting a band. I have played for many years but have never 'run the PA' and know very little about it. I bought a mixer but I need all the rest. So I need to purchase a power amp(s) and speakers/monitors (or active speakers?), a power conditioner, effects, compressor(s), cabling etc. AND I need to begin learning how to run it. There doesn't seem to be much talk of that here at Sonikmatter. There must be great sites out there but I can't seem to find them...

Hi,

I was just playing as everyday and I touched the Kurz with my knee (not so hard) and the screen started to "flicker" in the left side. I still can use the keyboard, VAST, etc., but, my concern is that maybe it wont work anymore in any minute. Is this an issue that need a technician?, does anyone know how to repair it?

Thanks!

Image-Line sale extended until Sep 8, 2010

Image-line had a "garage sale" through August, but just extended an extra week (until 9/8/10). $49 for many of their effect plug-ins and instruments.

Check here for info about the products. Then click the "shop" tab for prices.

A while ago, I got Drumaxx when they had a Pay-what-you-want deal with some amount going to help earthquake victims in Haiti. It's a pretty nice little drum machine. Don't have much to say about it. It's ok. I don't use it much, but I might find it useful.

The really killer deal (IMO) is Morphine, which is an additive synthesizer with some power-house features. You can watch some very informative tutorial videos, and download a demo to get a sense of what it does. I think for $49, it is hard to pass up. Let me try to summarize the structure.

Each PROGRAM has four GENERATORS.
Each GENERATOR has up to 128 KEY-RANGES (no velocity ranges with Morphine).
Each KEY-RANGE has a SPECTRUM, which is a vector-time-line with many BREAKPOINTS.
Each BREAKPOINT allows you to set the level, pan, tuning, and velocity of 128 harmonics.
When you press a key in the current KEY-RANGE, the 128 harmonics will morph through
all the BREAKPOINTS in the given SPECTRUM with an optional forward/reverse/bi-dir loop.

There is a MIX matrix to allow you to set another vector-time-line to mix among the four GENERATORS.

There are four ENVELOPES that can be assigned along with MIDI CC's to modulate some parameters.
(you can't control the actual Harmonics using controllers, but by setting up different BREAKPOINTS, you can control the balance between the two.)

Morphine also allows you to derive the harmonic spectrum of WAV and AIF files that you select.
This gives you a way of having a starting point from other sources. It's fascinating.

If you have a sample player, a bunch of subtractive synths, some specialty rigs, etc. you may feel like you have all of your bases/basses covered.
Morphine provides a different set of controls over sound, that might make you think about synthesis in a different way.

I'm running it on a MacBook Pro with 10.6.4 and it seems to work fine. If you are a windows user, I gather that
Image-Line is more dedicated to that platform in general, so it should be ok.

Loading an AIFF or WAV file into Kurzweil K2500

I created both a WAV and AIFF version from an audio file created in Digital Performer. The original sound was from a standard commercial CD. I saved my audio file in both an AIFF and WAV format and burned to disk in the "Core Audio Export: AIFF" and "Core Audio Export: WAVE selection in DP. I burned to CD using iTunes. When I tried to load either of these files into the Kurzweil the screen remained blank and finally the keyboard rebooted bringing me back to ProgramMode.

Next I tried burning a disk using the "New Burn Folder" feature in the Finder>>File pull down menu on my Mac. In this case, I created a data disk rather than the audio files I created above. The Kurzweil saw only an empty folder meaning that no data went to the folder. At least it made a folder this time. BTW when I checked the file in the burn folder before I burned to CD the file was there and I could even play it.

How can I get this file from DP on to a CD so that the Kurzweil can read it? Thanks for your help.

Is it really that difficult to find a decent bluetooth mouse?

I have an iMac, and I have just bought a wireless keyboard to make logistics around my home project studio a bit easier, so thought I would pair it up with a wireless mouse (makes sense no?).

I wanted to go the bluetooth route to keep the USB ports free, trouble is, nearly all the Bluetooth mice are notebook size mice

I checked out the magic mouse at my local apple dealer, but it is the ergonomic equivalent of a square toilet seat

The one I did find was a Targus one, specifically for the Mac - but jeeze, what a pile o' cack it is, whenever you click the left button the right one clicks as well due to the shitty design, and don't even get me started on the stupid optical scroll - needless to say I'm sending it back for a refund.

Maybe I should just acknowledge that I ain't gonna get a white or aluminium mouse to match my shiney iMac, suck it up and get a Logitech MX....

Using an iBook as a music workstation

I just picked up a Roland A-37 controller for relatively little money, and have an iBook sitting around not doing much so I was wondering if it's possible to marry the two? I have a TASCAM FireOne to handle interfacing, but software for the iBook seems to be non-existent now-a-days. There's a guy here CDM iBook who is doing some stuff with his iBook but finding old software is a challenge.

Does anyone have any ideas for finding older apps like Logic’s EVP73 plugin or Reaktor Session? I don't really need to use this as a workstation, more as an instrument. I'm even okay with paying for the apps, although probably not current prices.

Thanks

K2500 display problem

Hi!

I have a K2500 and have had an issue with not being able to see the display properly.
It's just bright and I can't read anything on it.At first I tried changing the contrast setting and it helped a bit but still pretty washed out looking. Then not even the contrast helped and it's just a panel of light.
I was able to see something when I plugged a jack into one of the sustain pedal inputs but still faint and fading, without the jack in there it's just light.

I changed the 9v battery too but no change.

Any ideas?

Delayed triggering on stacked setups?

Hi all,

New here. Just updated my K2000 to a K2600 yesterday.
Unfortunately, it was dropped by the shippers so there's a bent End Cap...

I'm getting an apparent delay on the triggering of the oscillators when I hit 5 or 6 notes with a stack of 3 or more patches.

Is this a known problem. Did they fix this at all in 4.x?
(I've got 3.01 running still.)

Should I keep this thing and try to fix it?
It's awfully cool synth.
I hadn't dug into K2000vx much in years. It's nice to be back in the VASTland.

Fatigued Floppies (and owner) K-2000 questions

Fatigued floppies and fatigued K2000 owner:

1.	My new computer arrived, and has no 3-1/2” floppy drive. My old ones were banished to join 5-1/4” and 8” floppies sitting in storage (along with the mag and paper punch tape). But now I’m concerned about my K2000 rack, with “A” and “B” ROMs, can I depend upon floppies for loading sounds and switching between KRZ and GM (which happens a lot) soundsets?

I called Paul Monroe, Orange, he no longer supports Kurzweil. I called Sweetwater, they no longer have SCSI drives. Does anyone offer floppy to USB stick interface? Other ideas?

I love my Kurzweil but I’m now genuinely concerned about how to keep going forward with this instrument and supporting my sounds in the future. Do I really have to upgrade synths now?

2.	I keep getting “Battery voltage low” error messages at boot, despite batteries testing ok. I’ve cleaned battery terminals thoroughly. Does anyone have experience with this? Anything specific board-level faults (solder whiskers, parasitic drains, etc.) that I should be aware of?

Thank you!
