K2x00 CD-ROM Image Maker V1.4 for Win32s & Win95
------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT: This version now requires Win32s 1.30 or later to run
under Windows 3.1x

------------------------------------------------------------------
0. What's new in version 1.4?
------------------------------------------------------------------
See the release notes below.

------------------------------------------------------------------
1. What this program does?
------------------------------------------------------------------
For all the happy owners of a CD recorder, this program allows you
to create K2x00 CD-ROM image files. It does not write directly to
the CD-recorder but generates a K2000 compatible raw binary file
on your hard disk (This file could be written later on CD-ROM with
the help of the program supplied with your CD-recorder).

This Drag-&-Drop application runs under Windows 3.1x and Win95,
and works in conjunction with the File Manager.

------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Installation procedure
------------------------------------------------------------------

For Windows 3.1x users:
-----------------------

- Simply unzip the compressed file in a directory of your
choice. Associate an icon with the file KCDMAKER.EXE in
the Program Manager and name it "K2x00 CD-ROM Image Maker".
Then check the following:

- To run under Windows 3.1x, this program requires Win32s
version 1.30 or later to be installed. To check if Win32s is
already installed on your system, simply verify the existence
of the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\WIN32S directory (where <WINDOWS>
and <SYSTEM> are where the Windows and System directories are,
respectively). You can determine which version of Win32s you
have in one of two ways:

- check the WIN32S.INI file in your Windows system directory.

- if you are running Windows for Workgroups, select the
WIN32S16.DLL file from the Windows system directory in
File Manager. Then from the File menu, choose Properties.
The Version line contains the major version and the build
number.

The latest version of Win32s is freely available from
Microsoft (and many other sites) at the following URL address:

http://www.microsoft.com/kb/softlib/mslfiles/pw1118.exe

or contact Microsoft if this location has been changed.

- This program also requires the CTL3D32.DLL file to be present
in the Windows system directory. This library is available at
the "K2x00 CD-ROM Image Maker" home page:

http://www.crpcu.lu/~perbal/k2x00.html

IMPORTANT: before copying it to the Windows system directory,
make sure a more recent version is not already installed
(by choosing Properties from the File Menu in File Manager).
If this is the case, do NOT copy the CTL3D32.DLL file.

For Win95 users:
----------------
- Simply unzip the compressed file in a directory of your
choice, and create a KCDMAKER.EXE shortcut in the Start menu,
and voila...

------------------------------------------------------------------
3. How does it works?
------------------------------------------------------------------
From the File Manager, select files you want to include on the
CD-ROM and drop them on the application's main window. A dialog box
appears asking you for a destination directory (A default
destination is proposed). Then click OK to continue. Repeat this
Drag-&-Drop operation until all the desired files are copied.

Be aware of the fact that files in dropped directories are NOT
recursively included.

The File Manager can be launched automatically by clicking on
the corresponding icon.

Under Win95, don't use the Explorer for Drag-&-Drop operations.
The Explorer uses long filenames which are not supported by the
K2x00's operating system.

The main application window displays all the copied files in
a list. Each line shows the destination file (as it will appear
on the CD-ROM) on the left column, and the actual filename on
the right. By double-clicking on one line, you can modify both
the destination and the source filenames including the directory
paths. The destination path must not include a drive letter.

You can also click on the Insert icon to add a new file. In the
dialog box, type in the filenames or click the Browse button,
and click OK when finished. To delete a line, click on the
Delete icon or simply press DEL.

When you're happy with the file organization, start generating
the binary image by clicking on the appropriate icon. After a
while, some statistics are displayed, including the image file
size. Check it doesn't exceed 650 MB (681,574,400 bytes). Aside
from that, the program will verify a corresponding chunk of free
disk space is available and eventually warn you before proceeding.

The program asks you for a filename (.TRK is the default extension)
and the image creation then begins. Be aware it could take up to 30
minutes for a full 650 MB file (on a 486 DX2 66MHz).

------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Writing to a recordable CD
------------------------------------------------------------------
To write the created image file to your CD-recorder you need
a CDR mastering program. Such a program is always supplied with
your CD-recorder, but more advanced ones are sold separately
(for example: "Easy-CD Pro / MM" from IncatSystems). You need to
write the file as a raw binary file, choose Mode 1 for data
organization on the CD and close the session as a CD-ROM.

Enjoy!
