Hello all, first time poster! Howdy.

Just curious, I have seen rumors of a new MacBook coming out, possibly an all touch version. This would be pretty damm cool if u ask me! Anyone heard anything about this? Saw a site when I was stumbling but cannot find that info again. Come on Mac heads, someone knows... smile.gif

Thanks!!!

Hi douggy.
New models of MacBooks, MacBook Pros and probably a MacBook Air refresh is announced at october the 14th.

Several analytics are not expecting the MacBook Touch to be released until 2009, but it would be nice to see them wrong.

So the countdown for new Mac laptops has officially started.

I am most curious about whether Apple can use the new Intel Mobile Quad-cores in their sleek model designs, I have only seen the Quads in bigger laptop designs so far. And of course I expect the price to be, eh, pricey.

I guess that Mobile Quad-Core computing will be thing for the nearby future, when Intel rolls out its Nehalem architecture.

And now the new notebooks are here, no surprises.

The new MacBook has no FW - a damn shame but saves me the bother of even contemplating getting one at least!

At first I thought this was a dumb move by Apple but then I realised that of course they want folks who need FW to stump up for a MBP - so not so stupid. Mind you, I won't be buying one of those either, not with the possibility of mobile quad on the horizon . . .

You can be guaranteed that there WILL NOT be any more revisions to the MacBookWhatever line until Apple releases new revisions.

In fact, I'll place money on it.

Seriously, if you want to sit around waiting and waiting and waiting, thats cool...but at some point you gotta just dive in. I don't want to buy a new car because I hear those teleporter things might be released next week. Or next year. Or next NeverInMyLifetime.

Umm no - I don't "just gotta dive in" – that's the difference between now and pre-Intel days. We know what's on the horizon so we can make reasonably informed decisions about timing such major purchases - as in this tax year/next tax year. Of course we don't know the when of it precisely, but we do know it'll happen. . . . sooner or later. Later is fine by me!

More ££ to spend on the important stuff! smile.gif

73 dollars and 14 cents.

I totally agree with Clif on the point of there is always something better round the corner, and you have to jump in at some time. Personally I am waiting for a Quad-core Mac laptop because it will suite all my needs, ever:) And I strongly believe that this will happen with the already announced Nehalem Microarcitecture from Intel, which in some form will make its way into new Macs Q2 2009.

The "new" white Macbook has retained the FW. Also has a super drive that can burn CD's and DVD's.

Okay, we've got $73.14 from the man with a black and white avatar in the first row. Who wants to beat that?

And if anyone tried to get me to pay up, I seriously hope they can read what I wrote tongue.gif

Just got back in town and saw the news, crazy! Cant believe they MacBook lack any firewire port. What about audio interfaces, cameras, video cameras, etc..? What about the Mac transfer thing when starting up, think its called Target mode or something. Guess you cant make use of that handy function anymore! There is a huge thread on Apples site about this, ppl are not happy...

Strange move Apple...

If you watch the keynote, Steve shows a diagram for the new MacBook's system architecture (scrub to 40:55 into the keynote). Apparently, the Nvidia chipset governs the peripherals now.
Now, if you look at the diagram from the MacBook Pro (at 29:01), you'll see that the same Nvidia chipset runs the peripherals, but now they include the FireWire 800 port.

Looks like it was a conscious decision on Apple's part. Sad.

i too am appalled by the lack of more complete firewire support... from what i can tell, the firewire configs on the new macbooks are:

white macbook: 1 firewire 400
15" macbook pro: 1 firewire 800
17" macbook pro: 1 firewire 400 and 1 firewire 800
regular aluminum macbook and macbook air: none

the macbook pros also have expresscard/34 slots if you want to expand. i don't get it - it's as if apple is hedging on ports or something. i hope i can wait until the nehalem laptops, but i have an ancient laptop. perhaps i have to look into adapters and hubs while i research the latest macbooks, sigh... well, at least the ram can go up to 4 gigs.

I spoke with an unnamed engineer at Apple...with the Firewire...not much to distinguish the Pro line from the new base line.

They take features off for non-pros. Want pro features...pay a little more for it.

This is the ONLY difference...most consumer level camcorders have USB connections these days...

that's a lot of $$$ for a little more screen real estate, storage and one firewire 800 port which is useless for my ULN2 without an adapter. (fw800 is nice for my hard drive though.) i'd rather get the white macbook if i weren't envious of the new nvidia chipset. ugh, i'm tired of waiting for the right macbook, and i refuse to get a 17" laptop!
clif marsiglio
You do know the 17" MacBook Pro's haven't been updated and won't be fore a couple of months.

I use the 15" MBP because it has the features I need...I don't understand people that claim to want something, but when it is there complain that something cheaper doesn't have everything the more expensive one did because if the cheaper one had everything else, it would be EXACTLY the same.

Then again, I'd take a Ferrari for the same price as my Saturn...or even a Saturn that had all the features and looks of a Ferrari for the same price too!

I would imagine that this functionality will be offloaded to the network port (or possibly USB...but this is less likely).

Well, how would you feel if Apple pulled FireWire from the 15" MacBook Pro, too, and only left it on the 17" model?
Someone who's been using the 17" laptops all the way would feel exactly they way you put it, but you? You would be as frustrated as many MacBook users are now.

yeah, i assumed that apple will keep both firewires for the mega-sized 17" incher in the future, though who the heck knows...

also, it seemed unreasonable that the macbook pro was sooooo much more than the regular one for such minor differences, the most obvious being the firewire 800. upon further research, i THINK the big difference is the pro's ability to handle graphics, thanks to a second nvidia graphics processor. so it's great if you're a video editor or a gamer. maybe for soft synth-related graphics too. i don't know..., the missing firewire 400 just might make me go for a white plastic macbook. (!!!) oh, the horror, the horror...
Ast A. Moore
The very first MacBook Pro lacked the FW800 port. It returned, however, after numerous complaints from users.

Just a thought.

Whats good all, it's been a minute since i logged on but i'm still around (not that ya'll missed me or anything)

Anyway, it may not do much but there is a petition to get Apple to reinstate firewire in it's next models.

http://www.petitiononline.com/MB1394/petition-sign.html

9000+ signatures and counting. like i said, maybe it will help, maybe not. unsure.gif
